Soon to Meet, Blackberry Made by Indonesia!

Canadian companies – Research In Motion (RIM) as the owner of BlackBerry smartphone has announced the discontinuation of production and selling of the BlackBerry phone, at 28 September 2016.

 

This decision taken because the company losses reached up to 372 million dollars or around IDR 4.8 trillion in the second quarter of fiscal year ended in August 31, 2016. Although the company decided to stop the business, but BlackBerry is preparing a new strategy to ensure the new phone using BlackBerry brand release in the future.

To bring it into reality, they decide to pointing third party in each country, and Indonesia become the first country who will start the Blackberry phone assembly.

 

PT Tiphone Mobile Indonesia Tbk. as the chosen company who will execute the BlackBerry business in the future. Tiphone who are also affiliated company from PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia will manufacturing and selling the Blackberry product.

 

Cooperation between BlackBerry and Tiphone can be seen in a joint venture company named PT BB Merah Putih. This factory will be built in Cikarang, West Java.

 

Reported from KONTAN, “The establishment of joint venture is to support the Indonesian government regulation that promoting the development of local products manufacturing,” said Ralph Phini, Chief Operating Officer and General Manager for BlackBerry Device Limited, Thursday (29/9).

 

By the establishment of a joint venture, BlackBerry product will be assembled in Indonesia. “ We will provide the software to fit into  the product (BlackBerry). So it will fully comply with the local rules material” said Phini.

 

As additional information, the former manufacturer, Research In Motion (RIM) is interested to assemble mobile phones in Indonesia, after seeing the high market potentional. “Indonesia from the historical sight is the largest and most important market for us. We have a strong presence in Indonesia,” said Phini.

 

Not only produces BlackBerry, Tiphone will also become as the official distributor of BlackBerry. “Tiphone will be our distributor in the Indonesian market,” said Phini.

 

However, BlackBerry said that the company do not have shares in PT BB Merah Putih. The joint venture will only plays role as third party for BlackBerry. “We don’t have a stake in the joint venture. We only provide BlackBerry license and our software to PT BB Merah dan Putih,” Phini explained.

 

Unfortunately, Phini can’t said the detail plan of production BlackBerry in Indonesia. He said that production matter give to Tiphone.
