Ministry of Industry Spur the National Steel Industry Improvement

Until now, the Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) continues to spur the increase in production capacity of the national steel industry, since the domestic steel supply has not yet reached 14 million tons per year. On the other hand,the domestic production can only supplies from 8 to 9 million tons per year, andhe rest is imported from China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, India and etc.

 

"Production of domestic steel industry continues to be optimized and directed to the development of high value-added of special products, to stop the steel import," said Airlangga.

 

Kemenperin also continues to encourage the acceleration of steel industry cluster development, for example in Cilegon, Banten which is targeted to produce up to 10 million tons of steel by 2025. In addition, steel industry clusters in Batulicin, South Kalimantan and Morowali, Central Sulawesi are also on the list.

 

Then, to boost the competitiveness of the domestic steel industry, the Ministry of Industry has set somestrategies, among others, the implementation of 4.0 industrial revolution  in the steel industry sector to improve efficiency and productivity.

 

Next, to link and match the vocational education and training program to the industry to produce a competent workforce.

 

"In 2018, we are targeting to create 300 thousand skilled labor, by holding 558 companies and 1,500 vocational school," said Airlangga.

 

Other step is is the implementation of domestic component level (TKDN) on infrastructure projects in the country.

 

In addition to focusing on the implementation of TDKN to increase the use of domestic industrial products, Kemenperin also apply SNI for steel products.

 

"Currently, there are 28 compulsory “SNI” for steel products to improve quality and safety in the domestic steel industry," he added.
