Improving Human Resource Industry through Vocational Education

The manufacturing industry still become the backbone of Indonesia's economic growth from its revenue from tax, excise and export contributions that considered as more valueable compared to other sectors. To encourage the increase in productivity and competitiveness in the national manufacturing sector, the Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) has done various ways, one of them by increasing the number of skilled human resources (HR).

 

According to Minister of Industry, Airlangga Hartarto, human resources is the main thing that must be built. For this reason, Minister of Industry launched vocational education program that carries the concept of Link and Match between vocational school (SMK) and industry.

 

Until now, the Ministry of Industry has aligned as many as 35 courses that the industry needs to apply to the curriculum in SMK.

 

"Study programs that have never existed are autothronic engineering and audio video engineering. This is what the automotive industry needs. Then, there is also a robotic engineering, "said Airlangga Hartarto in Jakarta, Sunday (17/12).

 

Other skill competencies, such as machine engineering, electricity utilization installations, electronics, industrial chemicals, welding, automotive body repair, industrial mechanical maintenance, steel vessel construction, mechatronics, heavy equipment, and metal casting. Furthermore, thread making engineering, apparel production, furniture, mechanical control, warehousing management, and production services.

 

Airlangga explained that the Ministry of Industry became the coordinator in the implementation of vocational education program nationally.

 

"Of the four phases we have launched for the link and match program between SMK and the  industry, 415 industries and 1,245 SMKs are involved, producing 254,037 certified workers," he said.

 

This is in line with the Presidential Instruction No. 9 of 2016 on the revitalization of SMK in order to improve the Quality and Competitiveness of Indonesian Human Resources. This strategic policy to reduce the unemployment rate that dominated by SMK graduates. Therefore, it is necessary to create a ready-made workforce with special skills to meet the needs of today's industrial world.
